Recycle Household Soft and Flexible Plastics & Foam Packaging

The Capital Regional District (CRD) now has more free, accessible locations to recycle household soft and flexible plastics, and foam packaging.
 
From May through October, the Beyond the Curb program will be accepting these materials at select community markets, making it easier than ever to recycle items that aren’t accepted through the curbside blue box program or through most apartment recycling programs.
 
The following markets will be hosting CRD’s Beyond the Curb Recycling Pop-up Depot. More locations will be added throughout the season. Check back often for updated information at https://www.crd.ca/news/crd-launches-beyond-curb-flexible-plastics-and-foam-packaging-drop-offs

Mural Cleanup – Quadra at Tattersall

Quadra Cedar Hill Community Association members gathered Monday morning (May 11th) to clean and maintain a community mural on Quadra Street that has helped deter graffiti for more than a decade.
 
Five volunteers worked from 10:30am to Noon clearing weeds, dirt and grime from the retaining wall and surrounding area near Tattersall Drive and Quadra Street (beside an old bus bay).
 
The roadside mural was installed in 2013 after the site was repeatedly targeted by graffiti. Volunteers said the artwork has remained largely untouched since it was painted.
 
“This is the second time that we’ve done a cleanup here,” said John Schmuck, past president of the association. “We did a cleanup here about five years ago, but it was time again.”
 
Volunteers trimmed overgrown vegetation, swept debris and cleaned the mural as part of an effort to brighten the public space and preserve a neighbourhood feature.
 
Chris Bartlett, a member of the association’s leadership team, said the mural continues to be an important part of the community streetscape.
 
The mural project was proposed by two residents who had the idea and helped secure funding for the project.
 
Before the mural was installed, the retaining wall had been repeatedly tagged with graffiti, the association said. Since the artwork was completed, volunteers say vandalism at the site has significantly decreased.
 
“I think people always prefer to have some beautiful artwork instead of graffiti,” Schmuck said.
 
The mural was funded by a grant from Ron and Betty Otke. Steve Milroy – of Steve Milroy’s Wonderworks – was the amazing artist who created the mural.
 
Over 5 garbage cans full of greenery were removed and taken to the Saanich Yard for composting.
 
Bartlett also encouraged residents to attend the Quadra Cedar Hill Community Association’s annual general meeting on May 26th at 7pm at the Cedar Hill Rec Centre. District of Saanich planner Carl Purvis will be the featured speaker.

Draft 2026 Climate Plan Update & Survey

The District of Saanich is inviting residents to read the DRAFT 2026 Climate Plan and share feedback before the final plan goes to Council.
 
The draft Plan is an update of the existing 2020 Climate Plan and outlines the pathway and actions to meet the District’s goals of reducing community GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 and to net zero by 2050, achieving 100% renewable energy, and improving community resilience. It includes 23 strategies and 99 actions across six focus areas.

Property Tax Information – 2026

Property tax notices will be sent out to Saanich residents by the end of May 2026.

Taxes are due by end of day on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
 
Please note, if you have not received your tax notice by mid-June, please contact the Saanich property tax department to obtain a copy. You can reach them by phone at 250-475-5454. You can contact them via email at propertytax@saanich.ca
 
Saanich offers a number of services that you can access to better understand and pay your bill.  You can also now pay your bill with your credit card (there is an additional convenience charge that will be added on to cover the cost of processing).
 

Emergency Preparedness Week – May 3 to 9, 2026

The Saanich Emergency Program (SEP) invites residents to take part in Emergency Preparedness Week, May 3 to 9.
 
This year’s theme, “In it together”, highlights the important role communities play in preparing for emergencies and supporting one another before, during, and after an event.
 
Emergency preparedness is about more than having supplies on hand. It’s also about building strong connections between neighbours, community organizations, and local government so communities are better equipped to respond and recover.
 
During this national awareness week, residents are encouraged to take simple, practical steps to become better prepared for a range of emergencies.
 
SEP encourages residents to start close to home by connecting with neighbours, talking about local risks, discussing preparedness levels, and identifying any specific needs within their area.

Accessibility in CRD Parks

The weather has truly moved towards nicer days and many of us will be looking to get out into nature and visit one of the great CRD parks on the lower Island.
 
The Capital Regional District has increasingly been opening up parks and trails to be more accessible for people of all abilities.
 

CHUFF – Garden Tour & Plant Giveaway

The Cedar Hill Urban Food Farmers (CHUFF) is hosting a Food Grower’s Garden Tour & Plant Giveaway.

Each CHUFF member has grown a flat or pack of extra vegetable seedlings.  The goal is to invite our neighbours and the general public to come tour a member’s beautifully productive garden and and takeaway a few vegetable starts or seeds to try growing food in their own backyard / front porch / balcony. 
 
It’s Not Too Late to Plant!
 
Last year’s event was so much fun.  Lots of folks came.  Dozens, maybe hundreds of veggie starts were given away – tomatoes, peas, squash, celery, cilantro, peppers, herbs,  plus seeds, and flowers, and plant divisions in pots.
 
People are making the connection between affordability, food security, climate catastrophe, and growing one’s own food.  CHUFF, in this once a year fun event, gives it a great big happy nudge in our own neighbourhood.
