CHUFF – Garden Tour & Plant Giveaway

The Cedar Hill Urban Food Farmers (CHUFF) is hosting a Food Grower’s Garden Tour & Plant Giveaway.

Each CHUFF member has grown a flat or pack of extra vegetable seedlings.  The goal is to invite our neighbours and the general public to come tour a member’s beautifully productive garden and and takeaway a few vegetable starts or seeds to try growing food in their own backyard / front porch / balcony. 
 
It’s Not Too Late to Plant!
 
Last year’s event was so much fun.  Lots of folks came.  Dozens, maybe hundreds of veggie starts were given away – tomatoes, peas, squash, celery, cilantro, peppers, herbs,  plus seeds, and flowers, and plant divisions in pots.
 
People are making the connection between affordability, food security, climate catastrophe, and growing one’s own food.  CHUFF, in this once a year fun event, gives it a great big happy nudge in our own neighbourhood.

Volunteer for Saanich’s Pulling Together Program

Have you heard of Saanich’s Pulling Together Program?
 
The Pulling Together program brings together residents interested in helping natural areas by removing invasive plants, restoring natural areas and enhancing local biodiversity.
 
Work parties give you a chance to be outdoors with like minded people to restore diverse habitats on rocky outcrops, creek side forests, wetlands, wildflower meadows, Garry Oak meadows and waterways.
 
This hands-on, inclusive ecological restoration program is a collaboration between the municipality and the community to ensure the sustainability and well-being in the present and for future generations.
 

Mother’s Day Concert in Playfair Park

Celebrate Mothers’ Day in Beautiful Playfair Park with a concert by the Reynolds School Bands!

Celebrate this Mothers’ Day in beautiful Playfair Park.
 
The rhodos and so many wildflowers will be in bloom, the playground will be bustling, and music from the Reynold’s Alumni Band, Senior Band, and Jazz Band will be filling the air.
 
Bring yourself, your family, some folding chairs / blankets and settle in for a delightful concert on a late Spring afternoon.
 
Date: Sunday, May 10, 2026
Time: 2pm to 4pm
Venue: Playfair Park (entrances on Rock Street and Cumberland Avenue)
 
Parking is limited, so consider coming by bus or bike. The Quadra #6 bus rolls a half block away from the Rock Street parking area.

National Volunteer Week – April 19 to 25, 2026

National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate the thousands of Saanich residents who give their time to support so many good causes in our community and beyond.

We also want to give a shout out to our own Community Association volunteers who keep showing up and giving their time and energy to help make our community a great place to live, work and recreate.

Victoria Foundation – Vital Signs Survey

The Victoria Foundation has produced an annual community check-up measuring well-being in the region, identifying concerns and supporting action on issues critical to quality of life.
 
The best thing about Victoria is our natural environment, at least that’s what residents said in the Vital Signs report for 2025.
 
Based on the results from the online citizen survey and local community data, the foundation develops a report that aims to connect philanthropy to community needs and opportunities. Since its 2006 inception, more than 43,000 people have participated.
 
In 2025, 5,280 residents participated, giving the region a B grade, and citing cost of living as the most important issue.
 
As the needs of the Greater Victoria community continue to evolve, the foundation is embarking on a process to reimagine what Vital Signs can be – today and into the future. So the Foundation is inviting community members to help shape that future with a special engagement event on May 12th.

The half-day, in-person event will provide an opportunity for participants to share ideas, insights and perspectives on how Vital Signs can better reflect community priorities, spark meaningful dialogue and drive positive change.

Public hearing date set for Proposed Quadra McKenzie Plan

The Proposed Quadra McKenzie Plan will go to public hearing on June 16, 2026.

Saanich Council has directed staff to re-designate certain parcels of land in the Quadra South area to reduce building heights near parks and create more opportunities for townhomes.

They also adjusted future land use designations in Quadra North area so that four storey apartments would only be possible directly adjacent to Quadra Street, with the remainder of the area designated as 3 storey Urban Townhouse.
 
The current draft will now be revised and brought back for Council’s consideration on May 25, 2026, before the public hearing is held in June where the community will have an additional opportunity to provide their feedback.
 
The QMP presents a vision for the next 20-30 years that helps prepare Saanich for future growth and lays the foundation for creating healthy communities that feature a diversity of housing options, active transportation infrastructure, vibrant public spaces, and services and amenities within walking distance for residents.
 
 
 

Tsunami Preparedness Week

Saanich is encouraging residents to take simple, practical steps to be emergency prepared during Tsunami Preparedness Week and beyond.
 
It’s also a great time to check your household plan, build or refresh your emergency kit, and make sure everyone in your home knows what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency. Don’t forget to include your beloved pets in your planning.
 
Saanich Emergency Program Officer Erin Stockill stresses that “Even small steps—like confirming your meeting place, reviewing evacuation routes, and restocking supplies—can make a real difference. Many people are surprised to learn that much of Saanich is outside the tsunami hazard zone. And for the areas that are within it, getting to safety is often straightforward—such as moving a few blocks inland from the beach, like at Cordova Bay. If you live or spend time in a tsunami hazard zone, we encourage you to practice your evacuation route on foot or by bike with family or friends.”

Container Gardening with Native Plants Workshop – April 28

There’s no space too small to have a positive impact on local biodiversity.

This workshop will discuss the benefits and importance of planting native species – even at a smaller scale.  Included in the session will be a variety of examples as well as a demonstration for making your own pollinator container gardens followed by a Q&A session.

This is a FREE session, open to all and timed perfectly to help you get ready for the season.
