Irrigation Timers in the CRD

Did you know that your irrigation timer could be putting major stress on our water delivery system in the CRD?
 
Thousands of automatic irrigation timers are set to go off on the hour in the early morning across the region, creating sudden spikes in water demand in just a few seconds.
 
Our water delivery systems are built to be strong, but too much strain can lead to leaks, pipe failures, and even main water breaks.
 
You can help by setting your timer to an irregular time during the overnight watering schedule. For instance, instead of 4am, what about 2:31am?

Hartland Landfill and Renovation Waste

Do you have renovation waste you want to take to the landfill?
 
Before you bring renovation or demolition waste to Hartland, make sure you complete the CRD’s Renovation Waste Pre-Approval Application.
 
This step is required for materials that may contain asbestos and helps ensure safe handling for you, and Hartland staff.
 
Know before you go:
 
⭕ Check which materials require pre-approval at https://www.crd.ca/programs-services/garbage-recycling/reno-demo-waste
 
⭕ Complete the pre-approval application before coming to Hartland.
 
⭕ Consider hiring a qualified professional to help you identify and safely manage hazardous materials that may contain asbestos.

Music in the Park @ Rutledge Park – August 18, 2026

Music in the Park is back at Rutledge Park.  This not to be missed, FREE event is open to everyone!

Our community association founded Music in the Park in Saanich.  Founding visionary Margaret Bachmann wanted to bring the joy of live music to our community and set about making it happen.

We are profoundly grateful for the support that we get from Saanich Parks & Recreation, the Saanich Police, donors, volunteers and especially attendees.

Come early to pick out the best spot for you and your family.  Maybe check out the splash pad while you’re here.

Dogs on leash are welcome, though, they may get a bit spooked as we expect well over 1,200 people to be in attendance.

Saanich Council Authorizes Amalgamation Question: Non-binding

On June 24th, Saanich Council approved a non-binding amalgamation question for the upcoming municipal election in October 2026.

Council authorized staff to place a non-binding public opinion question on the ballot for the 2026 General Local Election.  The approved question will ask electors: “do you support Saanich and Victoria becoming one municipality?”

The question is intended to gauge resident support for pursuing amalgamation further. The question is non-binding, meaning the results will not have legal or statutory effect, and will not by themselves create an amalgamated municipality.  Instead, the vote will indicate whether there is public support for newly elected councils to continue exploring the issue.

Climate Action Group Building Buzz About  – Pollinator Corridors.

What’s a Pollinator Corridor? Why do we need more pollinators?

Ninety percent of flowering plants are dependent entirely, or in part, on animal pollination. One in three bites of food you eat depends on pollination.

While our community has considerable green space with the natural habitat that pollinators require to survive – Swan Lake, Cedar Hill Park and golf course, Summit Hill and other fragmented plots, pollinator habitat is diminishing due largely to increased urbanization. Fifty percent of the world’s population now lives in urban centres.

We need to preserve or create more native habitat for pollinators on southern Vancouver Island and many bird, bee & butterfly-friendly folk are setting aside native habitat in their yards and gardens. They are finding alternatives to insect-killing pesticides, and planting pollinator-friendly plants on our boulevards. Are you, or someone you know, curious about creating a pollinator corridor on your street?

QCHCA’s Climate Action Group is keen to help link existing but fragmented habitat by planting Pollinator Corridors. Pollinator Corridors are  pathways to restore a diversity of permanent, high-quality, wildflower and native plants to attract and feed a range of bees, birds and butterflies.   As we restore habitat, we hope to map the existing pollinator plots so we can see what we have, and where to build more pollinator pathways to link the fragments. We hope your backyard or boulevard will be on the map!
